For The Love of God

Damien Hirst brings us the ultimate in morbid-bling, a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds, entitled 'For The Love of God'. Interestingly enough, I spent quite a bit of time with the inspiration for this work at Steven Gregory's inaugural exhibition at the Foundations old gallery in London. It is fascinating the way that skulls still seem to contain a personality, even if they are covered in precious stones. [via Geekologie]

Skulls Are The New Black

Gemstone artist Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof (with a name like that, the art industry is really the only route) jumps on the bandwagon with his gemstone skull series entitled Memento Mori, currently showing in the Hamiltons gallery in London. Interestingly a quick google search for the artist doesn't return his homepage (unless this is it?!) or (non-existant) wikipedia entry like most artists. Instead one of the top matches is about his tax-dodging shenanigans in New York, 5 years ago. This is a guy who really needs a google friendly website.
